Northwestern Ontarians in Support of the CBC

Save Our Northwest CBC

A petition to ensure stable and adequate funding for local CBC Broadcasting

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) is an emblem of national identity and provides Northwestern Ontario with a voice through which we are able to express our ideas, concerns and opinions.

Citizens of Northwestern Ontario rely on the CBC to provide up-to-date and reliable information on international, national and local issues; as well, the CBC is an avenue through which we may preserve and enhance our cultures and identity, celebrate Northern artists, and support diversity. In Northwestern Ontario, as with many other areas across Canada, we also rely on the CBC to provide a sense of connection among those of us who reside in remote and isolated communities and locations.

Unfortunately, like many organizations, the CBC is facing economic difficulties. These difficulties have been compounded by a Conservative government that has remained inactive. The result is the loss of 800 jobs, a projected decrease in regional programming, and a decrease in current affairs and special event programming. Locally, the Thunder Bay CBC radio station will lose 50% of its staff.

Join the campaign to call on the Harper government to reinstate the CBC, especially protecting those locations offering regional programming. Sign the CBC petition by visiting your local constituency office, and sign the on-line petition to show your support.

Petition to the Government of Canada

We, the undersigned residents of Canada, wish to bring your attention the following:

Whereas the entire media industry in Canada is suffering from a massive, but temporary decline advertising revenue;

Whereas the Canadian Broadcast Corporation (CBC) receives 40 percent of its funding through said advertising revenues and 60 percent from government allotments;

Whereas the CBC is experiencing a revenue shortfall of $171 million dollars and has requested a bridge loan from future CBC budgets to cover the temporary shortfall;

Whereas the CBC requires additional money to protect local programming on radio and television;

Whereas the news, sports, arts, culture, and entertainment programming of the CBC is an essential service for communities in Northwestern Ontario;

Therefore, we the undersigned call upon the Government of Canada to extend bridge financing as requested by the CBC in order to maintain the volume and quality of local programming and prevent job losses in Northwestern Ontario.
